The Dinner Bell
So, I walk into the room, carrying a coffee and a handful of peanuts. Skunkrat is sitting on my shoulder. The gang is all passed out, as they always are at this time of the day. Only Skunkrat was awake, being young, which is why she went along for the ride.
I walk in, I notice everyone's napping except for Skunkrat's mom, Gwen. She's always up and drooling at the mouth when I walk back in, having long learned that it usually means a treat. I walk up to her cage, say a few cute things to her, let Skunkrat inside and give them each a peanut.
My voice has awakened Bucky, a male I'm borrowing from a local pet store, who's in a cage above them. He's now looking for a treat, so he gets a peanut, too.
I turn around and the noise has awakened the guys over to the left, in the Condos, but not Mathilda or Andoria over to the right in Ratville. Andoria's buried in her nest somewhere, about six hours from having babies, but Matty is right out front, snoozing away. All the ruckus in the room hasn't stirred a whisker. If she hasn't awakened by all the talking and goings-on by now, she's obviously deep in slumber.
I talk to the guys for a minute and hand them each a peanut. As I sit down, I notice that Matty is still dead to the world. Gently, knowing what was going to happen, no matter how quiet I tried to be, I softly let the remaining peanuts fall into her dish.
Lightly, lightly; clink, clink, clink.
Matty's eyes POP open.
It was really cute. :)
