Slipping Through The Cracks

Here's a list of movies that didn't get a lot of attention, but I find to be exceptional in one way or another.

13th Warrior, The

A lesser-known Antonio Banderas film.  Granted, it means a lot more if you've read the intriguing Michael Crichton novel, 'Eaters of the Dead', but a fun movie, nonetheless.
16 Blocks

I'm sure the critics dismissed this Bruce Willis film outright, but I found it quite engaging, especially the second time through.
A Mighty Wind

This is a somewhat unique movie.  It's half-mockumentary, like Christopher Guest's other flicks, but, from a musical standpoint, it's as serious as it gets.  And it's a film-within-a-film, as they're not only filming the movie of the concert, but airing it as a live TV broadcast.  Very entertaining, one of those you can watch again and again.
Babe: Pig in the City

If you liked "Babe" but never bothered with the sequel, figuring that — like usual — it was going to be pretty bad, check out this rascal.  It could be argued that it's actually better than the original.  I've never been very amused by chimps in movies, but the ones here are hysterical.
Dogma

Just making sure you had this in your Netflix queue if you haven't seen it.  Put away your own religious beliefs (or areligious beliefs, case depending) and just enjoy it for the frolic it is.
Don Juan DeMarco

A wonderfully unique movie.  It's a love story, yes, but the difference is, the love in this story isn't a woman — it's love, itself.  Some nice insights into those "female" things you read so much about.
Down Periscope

A bottom-shelf Kelsey Grammer flick that's actually quite amusing.  Great cast, fun plot, and some really funny bits.
Dragon's World

I guarantee you've never seen anything quite like this.  God help you if you miss the opening 30 seconds.  That's when you're told that the following is a FAKE.  After that, it's played exactly like a real documentary, detailing how a dragon's frozen carcass has been discovered deep in the Romanian mountains and scientists are unraveling its secrets.  Some of the things they 'discover', like how a dragon breathed fire, are exceptionally clever.
Englishman Who Went Up A Hill
But Came Down A Mountain, The

I usually don't like British flicks, but I found this a welcome relief from the hubris of modern life.  It takes place in a tiny village in Wales and every moment of the film in interesting.  Tara Fitzgerald is a total cookie.
 Galaxy Quest

By Grabthar's Hammer, if you haven't seen this little gem, give it a whirl.
 Illusionist, The
Wow, is this thing great.  Best surprise ending since 'The Usual Suspects'.  Great filmwork and acting and some cool magic tricks.
L.A. Story

What a rare film this is, and how few are in this category.  It would properly be filed as a 'Fantasy-Romance' — if not 'Romantic Fantasy'.  Everything is played straight up — with one tiny, magical little difference.
Last Castle, The

A pretty cool Robert Redford flick.  Redford is an army general, now a prisoner in an army prison.  In a determined effort to bring down the warden, he launches a campaign just like the prison was an enemy castle, first enlisting his fellow prisoners, then attacking the "castle's" weak points.
Last Man Standing

A fun Bruce Willis shoot-'em-up, lost in the corridors of time.  If you like big, loud hand guns, this is your flick.
Let It Ride

A long-lost Richard Dreyfuss film, lots of fun.
Little Big League

Another 'little kid in the big leagues' movie, but better than most.
Longitude

IMHO, best made-for-TV movie, ever.  It's a parallel story, with one part about the man who invented the first seaworthy clock, and the other of the man who restored it a hundred years later.
Overboard

For just a fun, lighthearted frolic, some of Kurt Russell's earlier flicks are really a kick.  Along with this one I'd include "Captain Ron", and "Used Cars" had some good moments.
Robots

Lost in the shuffle of all the great computer animation movies that suddenly hit the scene was this extremely well done piece.  You just wouldn't think a bunch of nuts and bolts would be able to express such emotion.  Masterfully done.
Runaway Jury
A cool psychological battle between John Cusack and Gene Hackman.  If you like courtroom dramas, check this one out.
Sgt. Bilko

For some reason the critics just hated this thing, yet I found it wonderfully entertaining.  Great script, great cast, cool background songs, and Steve Martin does an absolutely perfect Bilko.
Showtime

With Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro playing the 'unwilling cop partners' role, how can you go wrong?  Clever script, nasty bad guy, and Rene Russo always brightens up the screen.
Sky High

Kind of along the lines of 'The Incredibles', where superheroes are plentiful and lead everyday lives when they're not out battling the forces of evil, this fun romp depicts their kids at high school as their own super powers develop.
Smokin' Aces
A wonderfully fast-paced movie with a great cast of characters and a fun surprise ending that'll have you reaching for the 'Play' button ten seconds after it's over.
Smokin' Aces 2 Just as much fun as the original.
